Project Spotlight: Expanding Opportunty at Mann Elementary.

At Hearth & Shelter Foundation, we believe that building strong communities begins with building strong foundations—both literally and figuratively. We were honored to lead a major infrastructure project at Mann Elementary, part of the Mastery Charter Schools network in Philadelphia, where we provided full-service construction management for a critical expansion.

About the Project
Mann Elementary serves students from Kindergarten through 6th grade in West Philadelphia. With Mastery’s continued investment in academic excellence and neighborhood revitalization, the school required a significant upgrade to support its growing student body and programming. Hearth & Shelter Foundation was brought on to design, manage, and construct a major addition to the facility.

Scope of Work
The project involved heavy civil construction, with a focus on long-term structural integrity and stormwater management. Key deliverables included:

Site Preparation & Soil Compaction
We began with extensive grading and compaction, laying the groundwork for a durable and stable expansion.

Concrete Footings & Flatwork
Our team poured and finished structural concrete footings, forming the essential base for vertical construction. This also included concrete slabs and surface work for safe, accessible outdoor areas.

Retaining Wall Construction
A large retaining wall was engineered and built to support the elevation change at the site, ensuring proper drainage and safety compliance.

Storm Drainage Infrastructure
We installed a robust stormwater management system, including drainage inlets and pipework, to handle runoff and reduce flooding risks for both the school and surrounding community.

Collaborative Success
From the earliest planning stages to final concrete finishing, our crew worked hand-in-hand with school administrators, city inspectors, and engineering consultants. The result is a seamless expansion that not only enhances the physical space of the school but supports its mission to provide high-quality education in a safe, welcoming environment.
